Having been back multiple times, it is due for an update.  Happy to report that they keep pumping out good, stick to your gut, diner food!  Two recent visits were for breakfast and lunch.

Breakfast this time was the Denver Omelette.  It comes with potatoes and toast but I suggest subbing the toast for a scone and pay the extra to do so.  Omelette was perfect.  Plenty of ham, onions, and green peppers stuffed inside.

For lunch, this was a first here and I went off some reviews and recommendations for the Riley Burger.  Ding...Ding...we got a winner here folks.  You get a hamburger topped with grilled ham, Swiss cheese, and the star here...chopped jalapeno's!  Cooked perfect, with a super soft bun.  I love how everything is on the side fresh, and ready to build your own.  Fries were nice and crispy on the side.

Nothing has changed and that is the way I like it...when it works, just keep it going!

It's cash only but there are a couple stores in the same lot with ATMs.  Same staff that has been here forever, serving up smiles and great service.

From the outside, you may drive by and think that they are closed -- but... if it's before 2:30, park and go on in. Classic old-school cafe seat-yourself atmosphere.  The locals go here, so you know it's good!  My husband had the Denver Omelette and I had the French Toast Combo - both were excellent - good cooked-to-order hearty homemade breakfasts!! And the price is reasonable - 2 full breakfasts, refillable beverages and it was just over 20 bucks!  We will be back ... maybe we'll see you there :)

I had just arrived in Salt Lake City and my hotel wasn't ready. It was breakfast time and I was starving. I looked around the area to see if i could find a cute place for breakfast. Stumbled upon Carls Cafe.

Inside is cute and quaint. There's about 10 tables in the whole place with a little Mitch bar with three stools at the front which gives you the vibe of mom and pop which I love. I was greeted by friendly smiles. The decor shows the history of Utah and this cafe. Not to my surprise there are skis for decoration.

The menus has plenty of options for breakfast and lunch. I ordered egg whites, ham, toast and tomatoes (pictured) so delicious.

It's a very neat and clean place if you're looking for a new place to try in the SLC area. I def recommend it.

Two things: they are CASH or CHECK only and only open until 2:30! Loved it!

Out with a couple of buddies for a late morning breakfast before my flight out of town.

I had a couple of fried eggs over easy, side of bacon and potatoes.  I also upgraded to the scones as my bread-side.

Highlight of the meal was definitely the perfectly cooked (for me crispy) thick cut bacon and the really interesting deep-fried scones.  The scones are more of a bread dough than the flaky scones I've had in the past.  They were served with some margarine and honey at the table.  These things are sinfully delicious! Glad I saw some pictures of the eggs so I ordered over easy.  Even so, they are more like medium... no brown spots, so that's spot on.  Potatoes are sliced and pan fried, the crispy side was tough, not very enjoyable.

Service was okay, not a really friendly or smiley bunch of employees the day we were there.

Glad we stopped... It was awesome to try their scones.

    Meh. **CASH ONLY**

    This food was ok.

First, I called and asked if they take cards. They don't. I asked when they might and the woman became snudy and said probably never because they've been doing that way "for 30 years".

We went anyway because we wanted to give it a shot.

I had the Alta omelet - it was bland
Chris had the Cottonwood omelet-  it tasted pretty good
Isaiah bought the Bacon Burger - the burger was average but the fries we tasty

Coffee was like an ither average coffee.

Basically a cash only Jim's only smaller.

    I doubt we would revisit.

Great space for a production though
